Running in Orlando

Where do people run there? I assume not near Universal Studios or Disney b/c the roads around there are a disaster, no real sidewalks or space on the side of the road for runners. Anyone out there have a clue? I'll be going there regularly for work and need a spot to run. Help!

Little Inlet NY route

I was out in the woods in NY this weekend and did a pretty decent run, route is below. It's a nice one because of the elevation change and the variation in elevation. Best part is the coffee shop in little inlet, run by a local with great coffee and donuts...

Running Group in California, MD

So I'm trying to find some people to run with down here. I know there are plenty of runners because I see a ton on base((PAXR), and even more in the neighborhood of Wildwood where I live. So who is out there? Please comment, or message if interested. Let's see who's interested, signs may even be posted to get this going y'all.

Also, there's a great field, that's groomed and really needs a game of kickball, who's in?

Rumor had it oprah had a house here...

In Venice, Florida. Rumor had it there was an 8 lot wide mansion, gorgeous one on the road I'm staying on here in Florida. Being the enterprising runner I am, I decided to run and find it....sounds harder than it was. I mean it's a single road along the breakwater...so wasn't like i was digging around. Best bet I had, or information was it was the house below..of course this is rumor and conjecture, but the house is gorgeous to run by, so I'll say mission accomplished, then again there's no record and this may be someone else's house here, but heck i wanted a good run and found one here on Casey key.

Either way I ran 2200 numbers on the road, for about 4.5 miles, got some sun and had a great run along the beachfront road. Only caution to anyone is the corners are blind and a little overgrown so watch yourself running!

Route's a million - Wildewood edition

Found one that looks to be the new old faithful. It's an easy 3.2 mile run, with some small elevation changes..but there's plenty of space and a nice dirt hill about the 1 mile mark off to the left that provides some fun and excitement....lots of it if you like hill sprints in dirt(which i do)
So anyone in the Wildewood neighborhood in Md can use it, or stop on in and we'll do a few miles

First Run at the New Place

Nice, easy 2.7 mile run in the cold at speed. First run out of the new place so figured I needed to post. It's not a direct start from my house but close enough, great short run. I'll start timing myself next month after I get back on the running horse as a way to track my improvement

Vibram Runs

Every Vibram Run is more painful than a non-vibram run

But not in a musculus-skelatal way, more in a sore muscles way. 8 runs in a row on the KSO's is making me sore, but starting to run better again. Need sprints in a week

Summer Dayz

Summer is upon us, the heat, the humidity, the salty sea breeze that's warmer than the standing air, ahh summer on the Chesapeake. Last week was the first time that it really was summer and this week is going to be the second. Looking forward to a nice run in the mid 90's on Wed and Thurs, might push it thursday for speed just to tax my heart on the 3.6 mile run i hit during lunch.

But who knows, some feedback will be coming, maybe a commentary on the other runners i see at lunch. There's eye candy, non-candy, dear lord and then the pseudo-runner, jogger and the guy who runs when he thinks someone's watching(really funny)

The winter blues

Winter is back again, with a vengeance. Thankfully I'm not kicking it in Atlanta because this would be me...
I don't know who made it but I'll pass credit to my friend Katie here on facebook for posting. I wouldn't be the drive,r, but rather the dude with the gym bag laughing at the driver and stopping to help, or maybe just standing around and taking the picture then walking off laughing. Depends on the day

But really, it's winter, I love snow, skiing but hate the early sundowns. Being that I work 8 to 6 or somewhere in there, its tough to get some of the Vitamin D needed, or even seeing the sun enough to not get all blah, for lack of a better word. Blaaah really is the word, I'm lethargic, cranky, ornery and just damn lazy. Drinking only sometimes work....might need to drink more, makes me go hmmm.
But really I'll be trying to break my funk, starting with the lunchtime runs moving outside. Ok, let's cage that "outside" running by saying I'll run outside at lunch when we don't have a North wind coming across the runway at 15 knots, because damn that's cold.

Collection Of my Local Routes

Hey there fellow runners, so I've become a Cyclist as well as a runner now so there will be a new feature when i have some sort of knowledge on what I'm doing when biking. For those curious, this is my new bike a Felt Z6 and I LOVE IT! Smooth ride, but this is to post some of my local routes here in Waldorf.

From shortest to longest, these are part of my regular staple runs when I need a day off or a light run with the last being my base run most of the time. For anyone curious, Dorchester is a neighborhood loop nearby about a mile long.
TSID - To School Inner Dorchester
It's a nice little run, about 3.6 miles, low on hills and has a path the whole way
TSOD - To School Outer Dorchester This one is best described as when I feel okay around the 3 mile mark, and want to push another mile out of the route even though its an off day.
Loop Run Eventually this will be my standard daily run, when I get back in shape here.

I Ran That way

This is a fallback to a route i ran this past weekend while sojourning down at Atlantic Beach in Jacksonville, Fl. The location was great, the hotel was definitely sub-par(very, but that's a different rant). One of the positives is that it was on the beach so I ran down the beach, or rather that way, towards that big ole streak. The route is pretty simple, run towards the buildings, and the pier(about 3rd street) go a little further then turn around and come home.
The run was great, but a little tougher than normal because I'm not used to running on the sand but well worth it for the 5 miles I ran down.

Finally outdoors for a real run

I'm back, and outdoors, again, which is amazing and excellent all at once. This run wasn't spectacular, actually it was incredibly painful. For some reason while being in Jacksonville my allergies flared, so that combined with the first day back up at elevation combined to make it hard to breathe. But enough with that, the route's a simple one with a 300 foot climb to end.

So here it is, I'll call it the early towner just because i don't know the area at all yet.

Hill Runs behind the Hotel

I'm off the Hamster Wheel!! Ok at least for today I am, hopefully the light will hold so I can run the hills around me a few more times. By Hills i mean canyon walls. The hotel is the Hampton Inn & Suites in Green River, Wyoming. To give a shout a great spot if you're out here. But the topo map of the area looks like this . So the map location isn't correct but the hotel is basically the intersection of I-80 and White Mountain Road.
I've done the East side of the Canyon and plan to run it again(right side of the map) but today i decided to handle the West side and i took pictures because the view is pretty spectacular. I will give a disclaimer that I am not a photographer, and I'll do better next time. The first shot is the view from the start, I started and ended at the same spot to try and keep it consistent. The start/finish is in the dark because i cut my runs short outdoors here due to darkness and wild animals out in the hills here. My Run went straight at the hotel, and up the hill to the left, it's only a 200 foot climb at first with the second climb being closer to 300 feet.

After the first climb I stopped for a bit to take a shot of what it looks like since I'm not talented enough with a camera to capture the elevation change. The hotel is right below and you can see I-80 and then past it the town of Green River, Wyoming.

After this the run involved circling the two spires behind the hotel and then heading up to the 6600' peak and then the 6800' peak.

After much running, struggling, some sprinting and raw exertion I hit the closer end of the 6800' peak, stopped and took a picture of the town. You can see the hotel in the center middle and Green River in the distance. I ran another 2 minutes up the hill, lost the light and turned around. It's definitely a great run and I look forward to going further when the sun stays up longer.

Either way I think this embodies the spirit of primal, find a hill or something and run up it. Gotta do it again and see more because the views are stunning

The day after Christmas

Twas the day after Christmas and I needed a run.....

And that's as creative as I'm feeling right now, mainly because it was a cold and damp the entire time, but that's what you get for running in December. So it was a nice 5 miler, or close enough to, with a two decent climbs between miles 3 and 4, back to back with just a little rest, so I'd say they're the hallmarks of the trot.

The run's attached here

So over the next week I'll be putting together my top ten runs of the year and hopefully getting enough downtime to clean the blog up a little bit. Merry Christmas

Back again

So I took a break, a few weeks to be truthful, but I haven't stopped running yet, just had to migrate to a treadmill, now that I'm back on the road for a bit I'll be posting a bit. Back in CT today was a simple 4 mile route, listed here.

So it was a simple little route, just a few changes in elevation, with some small climbs. Overall it's good but the road is a little narrow due to the snow now but otherwise it's a nice little run.

Morning Turkey Trot

Before the turkey is the run. Or at least that's my mentality, I need an excuse to pig out. But its kinda a tradition, I used to do the Turkey trot in Manchester except with all the travel I feel the need to get more than 4 hours of sleep. . So here's todays run. It was nice, pleasant with some slight hils, nothing extravagant but a good time.

I'll be lazy today for y'all as well as give a shout to my route tracker.

Also this runs in Connecticut, so a slightly different locale than normal

Treadmill review: Matrix T5x

As promised; upon day 2 on the treadmill here I'm writing a review. By day 2, I'm referring to the second day of many in a row because the suns going down to early here, so I've been on this treadmill before and know the ins and outs. I'm currently at the Staybridge Suites in Corpus Christi and they have the Matrix T5x treadmill.

The T5x is a newer treadmill, at least based upon my recent hotel experience, and the one here still has the feel of a newer piece of equipment. The link above shows the stats on it, basically standard for any treadmill nowadays, 0-15% grade and 0-12mph, nothing to exciting. The unit here has a very tight belt, and a stable deck so there's not a lot of rattle when I'm running on it flat or while running and adjusting the height. The user interface is a little confusing at first but you can navigate the options easily.

For my test I covered two workouts, the first was a longer run/jog to wake my body up that I usually do on Monday and then a speed workout the second day, both of which cover most of the functionality.

Pros
  • The belt didn't slip at all during the long run, or the speed workout(1 min walk, 1 min 9.5mph+ and repeat 15 times). For me this is a huge plus because I run heavy when I get tired
  • Speed adjustment can be keyed in on the keypad by your right hand
  • Comfortable run, the deck went up and down easily without much noise.
Cons
  • The E-Stop button is among the worst placed, it's dead center of the heart rate guard, so when you speed up sometimes you'll bump it. I did this once in the long run
  • If you do not change the time BEFORE you start your workout, you're stuck at a sudden shut-down at 20 minutes, this may have a fix but I haven't found the command yet.
Grade: B - that estop is really annoying
Overall though it was a pleasant run, I'd still prefer to be outside but the hours I'm working now are not encouraging it so I'm going to be on this puppy for a while.

Daylight Savings

I woke up this morning for the start of my yearly attempt to run in the morning during winter because I can go in a little later and hopefully avoid the treadmill. I did a nice primal workout consisting of sprints and felt great, only 5 for 30 seconds and 5 more for a minute, so more middle distance speed work, but still speed work and felt great. So daylight savings started out well....

Unfortunately I forgot that the sun goes down earlier, the same yearly defeat that place me on the treadmill tonight. Usually I'd venture out but there have been some local law enforcement problems near the hotel I'm staying at so it looks like it's treadmill time. In honor of every runners hated/loved device I'm going to put a few posts on hotel chains and which running aids they have; because I'm picky. So that'll be the theme as well as how to get a good run without being bored; which thanks to baseball I was able to put a solid 5 miles in without a problem.

Back down in Texas

Hey everyone, so this one's not going to have a route posted. Tomorrow I should have a decent one as I'm planning on going for distance here in corpus, looking at 10 miles or so.

The post today though will be about one of the best days, New Shoes Day. Everyone knows new shoes day, its the day you get new shoes and have to break them in. Mine occurs about every 2-3 months, or around 400-450 miles of running. The main indicator i use is when my knees start to twinge a bit, the shoes are hosed. I'm wondering what everyone else uses to tell them they need new shoes?

In case anyone cares, i run in the Asics Kayano, whatever the version is but i like the 15 better than the 14.

Writing to you from Corpus Christi Texas...

Hey all, so I've skimped a bit due to my schedule, so it was a treadmill day yesterday, today though, i decided to brave the heat. To put it simply, it was a failure. i got about 3.5 to 4 miles in and just died. It was ~100 degrees so i don't feel bad, but it does mean i have to run before the sun comes up, or after it goes down for any long runs...that or lose 20 pounds real quick.

So the Route's here, I'll call it the hot jaunt; not a bad run but i did get lost for a little bit in the neighborhood. The attempt was to make it to the beach, but i ended up missing it by a few hundred feet. Next Time
